Frequently Asked Questions — NHL News
Where can I find official NHL news and press releases?
Official NHL news and press releases are published at NHL.com. Each team also maintains its own media relations page for official announcements. For up-to-date game reports, injury updates, and transaction news throughout the 2025–26 season, this NHL Hub aggregates key stories from all 32 franchises.
How often are NHL rosters updated with transactions?
NHL transactions — including trades, waivers, AHL call-ups, injuries, and contract signings — can happen any day of the season. The most active periods are training camp (September), the November–December period as teams assess performance, and the trade deadline window (late February to early March).
What is the NHL trade deadline and when is it?
The NHL trade deadline is the last date on which teams can trade players for the current season. It typically falls in early March. After the deadline, players acquired via trade are not eligible for playoff play unless they clear waivers and meet other conditions. The deadline is one of the most news-intensive days of the NHL calendar.
What does "placed on injured reserve" mean in the NHL?
Placing a player on Injured Reserve (IR) means they are expected to miss at least 7 days and 1 game. Long-Term Injured Reserve (LTIR) applies when a player is expected to miss 10+ games and 24+ days — teams on LTIR receive cap relief proportional to the injured player's cap hit, allowing them to exceed the cap ceiling temporarily.
How do NHL waivers work?
When an NHL team wants to send a veteran player (one who has accrued enough NHL service time) to the AHL, they must first place the player on waivers for 24 hours. Any other NHL team can claim that player for free. If unclaimed, the player can be sent to the minors. Waivers are a key mechanism for roster management and often generate significant roster news.
