2025–26 NHL Standings and Team Statistics Explained

The table above shows the complete 2025–26 NHL standings for all 32 franchises, ranked by points. The standings determine which 16 teams advance to the Stanley Cup Playoffs — the top 3 teams in each division automatically qualify, while two additional wild-card spots per conference are awarded to the next-best teams by points.

How Are NHL Standings Calculated?

Teams earn 2 points for a regulation or overtime win, 1 point for an overtime or shootout loss (OTL), and 0 points for a regulation loss. A team that goes 40-30-12 earns 92 points. When teams are tied in points, tiebreakers include: games played, wins (excluding shootout wins), head-to-head record, and goal differential.

What Do the Key Stat Columns Mean?

GP: Games Played. W: Wins. L: Losses. OTL: Overtime/Shootout Losses (worth 1 point). PTS: Total points in the standings. GF: Goals For — total goals scored. GA: Goals Against — total goals allowed. PP%: Power Play Percentage — how often a team scores with the man advantage. PK%: Penalty Kill Percentage — how often a team prevents power-play goals against.

Eastern vs Western Conference

The NHL is split into two conferences of 16 teams each. The Eastern Conference contains the Atlantic and Metropolitan divisions, while the Western Conference contains the Central and Pacific divisions. Playoffs are seeded within each conference, so Eastern and Western teams only meet in the Stanley Cup Final.

Frequently Asked Questions — NHL Stats & Standings

How many teams make the NHL playoffs?

16 teams qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs — 8 from each conference. The top 3 teams in each of the four divisions earn automatic berths, and the remaining 2 spots in each conference go to wild-card teams with the most points among non-division-winners.

What is a good power play percentage in the NHL?

A league-average power play hovers around 20–21%. An elite power play converts at 25% or higher, while teams below 15% are considered weak with the man advantage. The penalty kill mirrors this — a PK% above 82% is solid, and elite teams kill penalties at 85%+.

What is the difference between GF and GA in hockey?

GF (Goals For) is the total number of goals a team has scored. GA (Goals Against) is the total number of goals allowed. A positive goal differential (GF minus GA) generally correlates with a strong team. Playoff contenders typically out-score opponents across a full season.

When does the NHL regular season end?

The 2025–26 NHL regular season runs from October 2025 through April 2026. Each team plays 82 games. The Stanley Cup Playoffs then begin in late April and conclude with the Cup Final in June, crowning a champion after four rounds of best-of-seven series.

What happens when two NHL teams are tied in the standings?

When tied in points, the NHL uses the following tiebreakers in order: (1) fewer games played, (2) more regulation wins, (3) more regulation + overtime wins, (4) head-to-head points, (5) differential of goals scored in head-to-head games, (6) overall goal differential during the season.
